NADP: A Phosphorylated Derivative of NAD
Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADP) is a phosphorylated form of NAD, formed through the addition of a phosphate group via an ester bond. It is widely distributed across biological systems and plays an essential role in cellular redox reactions.
NADP shares similar chemical properties, absorption spectra, and redox behavior with NAD. However, it is primarily involved in biosynthetic (anabolic) pathways, such as lipid and nucleic acid synthesis, where it serves as an important electron donor in its reduced form, NADPH.
